I'm looking to transition my Mum's laptop to Linux since Windows 10 lost support last October and doesn't get security updates anymore. The laptop is from around 2012, and it can't run Windows 11. I'm not very experienced with Windows myself, so any tips on making the switch to Linux would be awesome!

If you're new to Linux, I highly recommend Ubuntu for its ease of use and strong support. You might find it straightforward to navigate, especially for someone transitioning from Windows.
Zorin OS and Linux Mint are fantastic for beginners coming from Windows. Mint can feel familiar to those used to older versions of Windows, and Zorin has a modern look similar to Windows 11 without any bloat. It's worth trying both to see which one she prefers!
I just put Linux Mint on my dad's laptop, which is from 2018. For your 2012 model, I'd suggest using a live USB first to check if everything works fine before doing a full install. Once it’s set up, I showed my dad how to get updates, and he’s had minimal issues since then. Just make sure to help her with major updates when needed!
Look for a distribution that has long-term support — Ubuntu LTS is a great choice! Also, consider turning off notifications for major upgrades, so she can handle regular updates without the hassle of jumping to new versions on her own.
Linux Mint is excellent if it meets her laptop's requirements. It's quite similar to Windows, making it easier for her to adapt. Plus, if you’re concerned about performance, Mint has a version with the Xfce desktop that's light and user-friendly.
