I recently started a 24/7 on-call role, and I'm on the lookout for an effective non-audio notification solution. I'm particularly interested in something that won't disrupt my evening dance classes or jogging routines when I don't have my phone. Ideally, I'd like a device with a SIM card and vibration abilities but I'm open to any creative silent options. I want something I can wear throughout my on-call week that vibrates but is also durable for outdoor activities. Some ideas I'm considering include:
- Apple Watch, although I'm worried it could be too distracting and prone to scratches.
- Kids' smartwatches.
- Pine Time Watch (open-source) but I'm not sure I have the time to set it up.
- A fanny pack to hold my phone; any recommendations that are suited for dancing and jogging?
Any suggestions or experiences shared would be super helpful! Also, I have an iPhone if that's relevant.

I use a Fitbit that syncs with my phone via Bluetooth. It vibrates for notifications and is quite hard to miss. Just keep your phone close enough for the connection to work well!
You could get pretty creative and modify a shock collar with a microcontroller and SIM card to act as your pager. As for the fanny pack, look into runner's belts! They’re designed for active use and might work well for your needs.
Honestly, maybe consider looking for another job if it feels like too much stress. Just a thought!
I have the Apple Watch Ultra and I love it! I turned off a bunch of notifications that I find distracting. Plus, with cellular service, I don't need to lug my phone around all the time.
I wear an Amazfit Bip since it's affordable and pairs nicely with my phone. You can customize which notifications come through, and it works just fine for non-audio alerts. Battery life is also great!
