Are There Any Drawbacks to Choosing a Higher Wattage Power Supply?

I'm upgrading my rig with an RTX 5070 and considering replacing my old 550W power supply with a 750W Corsair RM750x. However, I've noticed that the RM850x is priced similarly and is more widely available. Should I be concerned about any disadvantages of opting for the RM850x over the RM750x, even if it seems like I don't really need the extra wattage?

You're basically getting more room to breathe without worrying too much about efficiency. The difference can be minimal, like 1% or maybe just a couple of bucks over a few years. If the 850W is easier to find and not more expensive, then get it!

Honestly, I don't see any downside to going with the higher wattage. It just gives you extra headroom for future upgrades. If the price is about the same, the RM850x is a solid choice. You won't regret having the extra power, especially if you plan on upgrading your GPU down the line to something more demanding.

Exactly! It’s great to have extra capacity in case you decide to add more components later.

There shouldn't be any significant disadvantages. Most power supplies run efficiently at around half their rated capacity, so the RM850x will actually be quite efficient at typical loads. The only thing you might consider is physical size, but in most cases, you probably won't notice a major difference. If it’s the same price, just go for the RM850x!

Right! A little extra power won't hurt, and you might save a few bucks on electricity over time too.

No real downside here. The PSU only delivers what your components need, so having a higher wattage won't force your system to draw more power. Plus, the RM850x might give you a bit of extra room for future upgrades. You might want to check the size difference, but overall, it's a win!
