I'm a third-year engineering student who's recently learned backend development using FastAPI and PostgreSQL. I'm interested in diving into AI and machine learning since I already have some familiarity with ML and Python. Is it a good idea to make the switch to focusing on AI-ML from backend development? What would be a good learning path for me? Where should I start, and what specific skills do I need to acquire to land a job in this field?

Instead of fully switching, consider combining both backend development with AI. This skill combination is highly sought after by employers. Since you're already planning to learn AI, maybe start with foundational courses and tutorials on machine learning and see how you can integrate those skills into your backend projects.

AI and ML do involve a fair amount of math, so it's worth considering how comfortable you are with linear algebra. If you’ve already learned linear algebra, statistics, and calculus before getting into machine learning, that's a solid foundation. A little revision may help ensure you’re up to speed!

Adding AI and ML to your skill set can definitely expand your job opportunities and give you a broader range of problem-solving tools. It's not just about switching; even if you don't end up in an AI-focused role, knowing AI-ML can help you tackle a lot of issues you may encounter. Plus, many companies are shifting their infrastructures to incorporate more AI solutions, which makes this knowledge very valuable.
