Why Does My HP Laptop Keep Freezing?

I've got this HP Envy laptop that's roughly four years old, and lately, it's been freezing really often—about once or twice every hour. Initially, I thought it was due to playing a demanding multiplayer game, but even when I switched to less intensive games, it still froze. I tried some basic troubleshooting steps I found online, which helped a bit—I managed to fix some corrupted files and an error on my C drive. After running more scans and updating drivers from the HP website, the freezing happens less frequently, but it's still a problem.

Now I'm getting freezes about every other hour with intensive games and less often—maybe once every few hours—with lighter ones. Once, while I was chatting on Discord, I could still talk for a minute before I cut off. I've also noticed some graphical hiccups during gaming, but I'm not entirely sure they're related. Honestly, I'm not very tech-savvy, and I'm at a bit of a loss; if this is just due to aging, then I guess that's that... but I really want to enjoy my games without worrying about freezes. I'm on Windows 11 but I'm unsure about the specs.

It sounds like your laptop might be overheating, which can definitely cause those freezing issues. I'd recommend checking the internal temperatures when it freezes. You can use software like HWMonitor to see if it's running hot. If it's not overheating, it could be a sign that your hardware is starting to fail. Just in case, run a full system scan with a tool like Malwarebytes to rule out any malware that might be affecting performance too.

Also, don’t forget that background apps like Discord can sometimes cause issues while gaming. Try closing it when you play, just to see if that makes any difference. If the freezing continues, you might want to look into some hardware diagnostics to check for failing components.
