Why is my Linux Mint with KDE Plasma freezing frequently?

I've been experiencing frequent freezes on my Linux Mint system that uses the KDE Plasma desktop. I suspect it could be related to a few things: I dual-boot with Windows and have installed Nvidia drivers, and I recently connected a second monitor through my motherboard while my main monitor is connected to the GPU. Since adding the second monitor, my taskbar also stopped auto-hiding; it's positioned to the right of the main screen, which is also where the second monitor is located. My setup includes an Nvidia GTX 1660 graphics card, an AMD Ryzen 5 7600X processor, and 32 GB of RAM. When the system freezes, the audio continues to work, but I can't interact with anything, and I have to use the power button to restart the computer.

Just a heads up, if you're set on keeping Mint, double-check your Nvidia drivers and consider using the version designed for your desktop environment. There could be some surprises with graphics settings that lead to freezes. Combining Windows with Linux in a dual-boot can be tricky, especially with hardware drivers. Just my two cents!

Good point on the drivers! I had similar issues before, and fixing those made everything a lot smoother. Definitely worth a shot.

I think I’ll try updating my drivers and see how that goes before making any drastic changes. Thanks!

It sounds like you might have hit a few compatibility issues with Mint and KDE Plasma. Mint isn't officially supported with Plasma, which could lead to the freezing problems you’re experiencing—especially with multi-monitor setups. Have you considered switching to a distro that natively supports KDE Plasma? It'll save you a ton of headaches in the long run! Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion! I chose Mint because I heard it's user-friendly, but maybe it's time for a fresh start with something like Kubuntu that comes with Plasma already. Appreciate the help!

Yeah, I had similar issues with using unsupported setups. Switching to a more compatible environment made a huge difference for me.
