I'm helping my friend build his first PC for his birthday, and I'm looking for suggestions on what graphics cards I can buy for around $50. I'm open to getting used ones to stay within budget.

Yeah, for $50, used is the way to go. Cards like the RX 580 or GTX 1060 are usually available in that range. I’ve even seen a buddy picking up a 1060 for just $51, which is a sweet deal!
Try checking Facebook Marketplace and see if you can haggle a bit. You might come across something like a GTX 980 or GTX 1060 if you're lucky!
At this price point, you'll definitely have to look at used cards. I’ve seen listings for RX 580 8GBs around $60 on eBay. I wouldn't recommend going any lower than that.
An overclocked RX 580 can still perform well at 1080p. If you can find a Vega 56 for that price, grab it! It's an even better option.
