Upgrading Laptop RAM for Development: 32GB Dual-Channel vs 40GB Mixed

I'm looking to upgrade the RAM in my Acer Aspire 7 laptop and could use some advice. Currently, I've got an i5 10th gen (10300H) along with a GTX 1650, and I'm working with 16GB (2x8GB). However, I'm frequently hitting RAM limits due to my workload, which includes lots of Chrome tabs, heavy IDE usage (like VS Code and IntelliJ), Docker, WSL, and sometimes Kubernetes. My system starts lagging under memory pressure, even though it handles games like Witcher 3 just fine.

For my future development needs, I want to improve my multitasking with heavy IDEs, Docker containers, local Kubernetes, terminals, and some AI/ML tooling—essentially, I want to run multiple VMs without worrying about memory constraints.

I'm considering two upgrade options:
1. **32GB (2x16GB) dual-channel, meaning I'd remove both existing 8GB sticks.**
2. **40GB (32GB + existing 8GB) with mixed channels, meaning I'd remove one 8GB stick.**

I know dual-channel memory is generally faster, but I'm curious if there's a noticeable difference in day-to-day development work between 32GB dual-channel and 40GB mixed? Have any of you used the 40GB setup and experienced problems? In real-world usage, is the total memory capacity more crucial than the speed from memory channels?

Also, I found out that my motherboard only supports up to 32GB in total, so that's settled. Now, regarding RAM prices, is $230 a fair deal for Crucial 2x16GB DDR4 3200MHz?

Definitely check if your motherboard supports more than 32GB- it's crucial! But generally, 16GB dual-channel is better than 32GB mixed. In my experience with an Omen and 4800H, switching to dual-channel RAM dramatically improved my development workflow. It’s something to consider!

Yeah, I missed that detail too, but once I realized my laptop's cap was 32GB, I had no choice but to go with dual-channel. Now I have some extra 8GB sticks lying around!

Same experience here! I thought dual-channel wouldn’t make a huge impact, but it made a noticeable difference.

Concerning prices, $230 for 32GB RAM is a bit steep right now. You might want to shop around a bit more because I’ve seen better deals lately, especially if you’re not in a hurry to upgrade.
