Understanding the 12VHPWR Connector for Corsair RM850X Power Supply

I'm curious about the Corsair RM850X power supply and its capabilities. I've read that it can only deliver up to 300W to a GPU, but Corsair's website claims that the 12VHPWR cable can provide up to 600W. Which is correct? I'm waiting for my RTX 5070 to arrive, and while I believe both should be fine for now, I'm concerned about future upgrades in the next 4-5 years. Will the wattage from the power supply be a limiting factor down the line? Thanks for the insights!

It really depends on which version of the RM850X you have. If it’s the ATX 3 model, then yes, it likely delivers between 450 to 600 watts. You’ll need around 600W only for the upcoming powerful GPUs, while 450W should work for the 4090 or 5080 models. Just keep in mind the motherboard adds an extra 75W to the GPU as well!

I’ve had great experience with the RM850X! Using the right 12VHPWR option, you’ll be covered for your RTX 5070 for now and future upgrades should be manageable too. If you're planning for a feasible future upgrade, keep an eye on what GPUs require wattage then.

You're right, it’s rated for 600W. The confusion around 300W usually comes from single 8-pin connections with a pigtail, which Corsair lists for that amount. But with the 12VHPWR connector, you’re good to go! Their cables are high quality, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

The RM850X should be capable of delivering 600W if you're using the 12VHPWR cable that connects via two 8-pin connectors. Just make sure you're using the right cable for those new Nvidia cards!

Got it! So it sounds like I should be okay with my setup.
