Is it better to upgrade RAM or repair a faulty slot?

I'm dealing with a mini PC that has two RAM slots, but unfortunately, the second one isn't working anymore. I tried switching my two 4GB RAM sticks around, and only the first slot works. I'm considering buying a 16GB RAM stick to use in single-channel mode, but I'm unsure if that's a good idea. Is it worth upgrading, or should I focus on fixing the second RAM slot?

I’d recommend fixing that second slot. What are you using the PC for? If it's mostly just basic tasks, then a single 16GB stick should suffice. But if you're into gaming or heavy multitasking like video editing, dual-channel with 8GB can actually give you a noticeable performance boost in many scenarios.

Consider how much the repair might cost. Sometimes it’s more than you anticipate. You could take it to a repair shop for a quote. Also, check the price of a new 16GB stick. Sometimes upgrading the entire motherboard could be a viable option, especially if you're using older DDR4 RAM. You might find that upgrading to 16GB or even 32GB could be less expensive than fixing the current motherboard, depending on where you shop.

Definitely try to fix that second slot before investing in anything else. It might just be a bent pin, a BIOS issue, or simple dirt. Running with a single 16GB stick can hurt your performance compared to 8GB running in dual channel, especially for tasks like video editing.

You really want to take advantage of dual-channel performance by using two sticks. Sure, a single stick works, but you'll miss out on a significant performance boost—up to 20-30% in some apps.
