Which Motherboard to Choose for a Workstation/Gaming PC: MAG X870E Tomahawk WiFi or ROG Strix X870E-H WiFi7?

I'm in the process of building a powerful workstation/gaming PC, and I'm torn between two motherboard options: the MAG X870E Tomahawk WiFi and the ROG Strix X870E-H WiFi7, both priced the same at €300. I plan to pair the motherboard with an upcoming R9 9950X3D2 CPU and 96 GB of RAM (I've got 6600 MHz Intel XMP memory). My cooling solution will be a 360 mm Corsair Titan AIO, and I'm wondering if there are any mounting compatibility issues.

For my tasks, I will run long FEM and CFD simulations utilizing the 16-core processor, and I occasionally game for fun. I will start with a 4 TB Samsung 990 Pro SSD, but I'd like to ensure the motherboard can accommodate more drives in the future, ideally with effective heatsinks. I'm not entirely clear on how the shared PCIe lanes for M.2 slots and the x16 GPU slot affect performance.

The Tomahawk features an ALC4080 audio codec and Wi-Fi 7, while the ROG offers an ALC1220-VB codec with Wi-Fi 7 as well. Is this difference significant for my use case? While the Tomahawk is generally well-reviewed, I'm drawn to the aesthetics of the ROG Strix but unsure of its potential drawbacks. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Make sure to consider PCIe lane sharing if you plan to add more drives later on. Mobomaps.com has great resources for visualizing lane allocations, which can help you understand potential bottlenecks!

Just a heads up, there have been reports of some Asus boards having issues with the Ryzen 9000 CPUs, so I’d lean towards MSI. Nobody wants to risk frying their expensive components!

Definitely concerning! I hope those issues don’t repeat with my build.

I chose the X870E Tomahawk with my 9950X3D and the ability to support multiple drives was a determining factor for me. Plus, I just wanted to go for the best this time, and I've had zero issues!

I’ve been an Asus motherboard user for over 20 years, but I’ve shifted away from them recently because I find I pay a premium for features I don’t get, plus their software can be pretty bad. I switched to an MSI motherboard and couldn’t be happier, so I’d recommend the Tomahawk!

I’ve got the MAG X870E Tomahawk, and I really love it! I originally picked it over other options primarily for the extra USB ports. Definitely no regrets here!

What kind of RAM are you using with it?

The Strix has a flashier design, but I definitely prefer the MAG line for its user-friendliness. Motherboard weaknesses can be pretty subjective, so I’d suggest going with your gut feeling. If you find both at the same price, choose the look you like best!

That’s reassuring! I just want to avoid any quality issues, especially for that price.

I used to be an Asus guy too, but I've had way too many issues with their boards and customer service. At work, we use MSI boards extensively, and they’ve held up really well. I vote for the Tomahawk!

Nice to hear that! Reliability is key, especially in a professional setup.
