Could My Motherboard Be Overclocking My CPU by Default?

Hey there! I've been noticing that my Intel Core i7 10700KF is overheating quite a bit when I'm gaming, especially with titles like Apex Legends and Arc Raiders. Recently, I upgraded my cooling system to a TR Peerless Assassin 120FE, so I'm pretty confident that the cooler is working fine and properly mounted, plus I've checked that the thermal paste was applied correctly.

I came across a video from an expert who mentioned that some motherboards tend to overclock CPUs beyond the recommended limits right out of the box, which could lead to overheating and thermal throttling under heavy use—particularly with Intel CPUs.

I'm using a Gigabyte H510M H motherboard, and I haven't really delved into the BIOS before. Can anyone help me figure out if my motherboard is overclocking the CPU and, if so, how to stop it? I really appreciate your help!

P.S. I'm not a tech expert, just a regular gamer and worker, so apologies if I sound a bit clueless.

What kind of overheating are you experiencing? If your temps are hitting 80-85°C while gaming, that's pushing it. It could be thermal throttling if your CPU usage drops significantly during this time. Most modern CPUs do run a bit 'overclocked' by default, but consistent thermal throttling is not ideal. Keep an eye on those temps!

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what’s happening—my CPU temps are going up and down, causing lag. Guess I need to take a closer look at my settings.

Before you dive into the BIOS, double-check that you removed the plastic protection from your cooler—it happens more often than you'd think. Just making sure you eliminated all potential issues!

Yeah, I took that off before installing. It was pretty obvious, so I didn’t forget it.

You're definitely gonna want to set your BIOS back to Intel Defaults. Those motherboard overclocks can sometimes cause more harm than good. Look for something similar to the settings shown in that image—they'll help stabilize your CPU without causing overheating problems.

Actually, a lot of motherboards come with settings that automatically tweak your CPU performance to the max, which often results in it running hotter than necessary. Check for any options related to 'default configuration' in your BIOS—this might let the motherboard manage settings based on your CPU specs. I had a similar issue with my Ryzen, and I ended up having to undervolt it due to overheating.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely look into that while troubleshooting.
