Best Ways to Rip DVDs and Blu-rays on Linux Mint

I'm working on transforming a couple of old laptops into media servers because I've got a huge collection of DVDs and Blu-ray discs that I want to rip. After I install Linux Mint, I'm planning to use MakeMKV for the DVDs, but I'm not sure what I need for ripping Blu-rays. My main goal is to set up a local media share with Plex since my TV doesn't support Jellyfin, and I want to avoid resubscribing to streaming services like Netflix. Any tips or guidance on this?

For your laptops staying on while closed, you can adjust the power settings. Just set the 'Close Lid Action' to 'Do Nothing' in the Power settings. That should keep your laptops running even when the lid is shut!

My usual method is dvdbackup followed by MakeMKV and then moving the files to the directory for Jellyfin. It's a straightforward process, but just curious, is there a specific reason you do the dvdbackup first?

Yeah, they are individual programs. I find dvdbackup helps in managing the data extraction better before handling it with MakeMKV.

MakeMKV is definitely a solid choice for ripping Blu-rays, but it can depend a lot on the disc and your Blu-ray drive's encryption handling. Some drives are better suited for this task than others. It might take some trial and error to find one that works well, so if anyone has recommendations for compatible drives, that would be awesome!

Yeah, I'll check out the forums for advice on external drives. It's frustrating how complicated they make it to rip your own media!
