I'm looking to upgrade my CPU and debating between the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Currently, I'm using an ASUS B650M motherboard, a Ryzen 5 7600X, and a Cooler Master Hyper 212 ARGB cooler, which is rated for around 150W. My GPU is an RTX 3090, and I usually play 1080p games like COD Warzone, Marvel Rivals, and CS2. The 7800X3D would work with my current cooler, so I wouldn't need to change anything else in my setup. However, the 9800X3D might require a better cooler, which could mean upgrading my case too, making it more complicated and costly. I'm curious: 1. Is my B650M motherboard suitable for the 9800X3D? 2. Is the performance upgrade from 7800X3D to 9800X3D worth the extra cost of cooler and case? 3. Would the 7800X3D be a better choice for gaming at 1080p? Thanks for any insights!

I wouldn't worry too much about TDP ratings anymore. The 9800X3D might be slightly cooler in gaming despite being more powerful due to its design. If you're looking for easy cooling, consider a dual air tower or a 240mm AIO. But honestly, I'd still recommend the 7800X3D for simpler setup and very good performance without the fuss of case upgrades.
About your motherboard, a B650M should handle the 9800X3D just fine. However, I'd lean towards the 7800X3D since the performance difference in gaming isn't huge, and it runs cooler and uses less power. The 7800 is a solid choice for 1080p gaming—a better bang for your buck!
The real question is whether you're seeing significant improvements in FPS between the two CPUs with your current games. Benchmarks can really help you decide if that extra cash for the 9800X3D is worth it. If you’re only touching a few extra frames, the 7800X3D is likely the better route for your resolution.
Both CPUs are great, but it ultimately comes down to how much you're willing to spend. The 7800X3D is definitely easier to manage and would work well for 1080p gaming. Just check benchmarks to see the actual performance difference based on your games. It could be less than you'd expect!
Exactly! If you're only gaining a few FPS at that resolution, it might not be worth the hassle of changing coolers and cases.
If your cooler is the Hyper 212, I’d advise against it for either CPU. They might generate more heat than it can handle efficiently. Even if you go for the 7800X3D, you might want to upgrade to something a little beefier.

I've got a similar setup with the 7800X3D and a decent air cooler, and performance has been great without heating issues!
