How many years can I expect a 10th Gen laptop to last for programming and light tasks?

I'm considering purchasing a Dell Precision 7550 laptop with an Intel Core i7 10th Gen processor, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and a dedicated GPU. My main uses will be programming with tools like VS Code and occasionally heavier IDEs, web browsing with multiple tabs, and light multitasking. I'm not into gaming, heavy video editing, or 3D work. Realistically, how many more years do you think this setup will comfortably last? Also, since it has a 10th Gen processor, how long will it remain relevant in terms of Windows support and performance for modern development tools? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Honestly, your laptop will probably die before it becomes obsolete for programming. Unless you're working with massive desktop apps, this machine will suffice for web app development or light tasks for a long time!

It really depends on the type of programming you're doing, but unless you're doing heavy compilations, you should be good for many years. I'd say this laptop can comfortably handle your needs for at least 4 years without feeling outdated.

I still code on much older hardware! Even a 15-year-old machine can handle basic programming tasks if you're not pushing too hard. Your 10th Gen laptop is definitely going to serve you well for years!

In terms of software support, you'll be fine for several years. The specs are solid enough that it'll still run most applications for quite a while. Just keep it in good condition!

This setup should last you quite a while! For light programming and browsing, you can easily expect at least 5-6 years. If it starts feeling slow, switching to Linux could extend its life even more, perhaps another 5-6 years. Just keep the machine cool and maintain the battery health.
