Why is my Windows 11 reset taking so long?

Hey everyone! I started resetting my gaming PC earlier today between 3 PM and 4 PM, but it's now 9 PM, and it feels like it's been going forever—about 5 to 6 hours. I'm getting anxious since I want to sell the PC tomorrow after wiping it clean. The system is around 5.5 years old and has two 1TB Samsung NVMe SSDs, but there's nothing too sensitive on them. Still, I wanted to ensure old files can't be recovered by the buyer. I used the "Reset this PC" option and selected to remove everything, which I'm starting to doubt was a good choice.

I'm worried that it might not finish by tomorrow. Is there any way to fix this situation? Also, if I decide to stop the reset process, what happens next? Will my PC still boot, or could it be broken? If it is broken, can I just reinstall Windows using a bootable USB? I have a 32GB USB stick ready for a fresh Windows 11 install. Any advice would help!

As someone who handles Windows deployment for an organization, I can tell you those resets can drag on way longer than expected. If it’s getting close to 10 hours, just wipe and reinstall—it’s much faster and avoids all the hassle!

To fully secure your data before selling, consider using the SSD manufacturer’s utility to perform a secure wipe first. Even after a Windows reset, you can often recover old files unless you do a complete wipe. Then, you can reinstall Windows fresh from your USB.

Yeah, that factory reset can be really slow. Honestly, many people recommend just doing a clean install instead of relying on the built-in reset option. If it’s stuck now, there's a good chance it messed something up along the way. If you do have to abort the process, your PC might not boot properly, but don't worry too much—you can always just reinstall Windows using your USB stick if it doesn't work.

Right? I've had the same issue before—it’s usually quicker to just wipe everything and start fresh!

Seriously, just grab the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft! It’ll help you create a bootable USB that reinstalls Windows 11 in about 20 minutes. It's way faster than sitting through that reset process!

Before selling, it’s best to do a full wipe to securely erase everything. If you go for a new install, use the link I provided; it's a standard guide for installing Windows 11. It’ll show you how to set things up from your USB drive.
