My ASUS Laptop Is Slow, Crashing, and Running Out of Storage. What Should I Do?

I've had my ASUS laptop for a little over a year, and in the beginning, it performed great, handling games without any issues. However, it started to become really slow just months after I got it, and now it can barely run anything without overheating. I mostly use it for watching YouTube because I'm unable to download anything anymore.

I currently have 58GB of storage, but for some reason, it's showing 56GB used with only Minecraft downloaded. I don't understand why my installed apps are taking up 28GB of space! I'm concerned that this might be due to malware. I'm contemplating whether I should run a virus scan, delete files, do a factory reset, or just save up for a new computer altogether.

It seems like you might be running on an eMMC system with limited storage space. When storage is full, it can severely slow down the system. Plus, the laptop likely has trouble with RAM since it probably has only 4GB. Windows can consume a lot of resources, and that might explain the crashes. It’s a common issue with lower-end laptops running recent versions of Windows. If you can, consider cleaning out the inside of the laptop, making sure fans are clear, and see if you can upgrade your storage.

If your only download is Minecraft and you see 28GB listed as installed apps, there may be a lot of hidden files piling up. It's worth investigating further. Make sure to check your storage settings to see what's really using up space. If this is an older model from ASUS, like those cheap Vivobooks, they aren't really meant to run Windows smoothly due to the low specs.

It sounds like your laptop might be struggling due to limited storage. With such tiny storage, it's not uncommon for it to fill up quickly with Windows updates and hidden files, rather than malware. I would recommend running a virus scan to be sure, but also try clearing out temporary files, and consider doing a factory reset to free up space. If it remains slow and continues to overheat, your hardware might just not be up to the task, and you might want to start saving for a new laptop.

Yeah, it definitely sounds like those Windows updates are taking up a lot of your space. Your storage is very limited, and that can cause a lot of issues. Cleaning things up might help, and if you can, think about getting an M.2 SSD if your model supports it. That could vastly improve performance.
