Feeling Lost in Programming: How Do I Get Better?

I'm a second-year computer engineering student focusing on backend and embedded systems, but I'm struggling to actually code. I understand most concepts and can solve problems, but writing code feels really challenging. Is it because I'm not coding enough? Am I just bad at syntax? I'm supposed to be working on projects for my resume and applying for internships, but I feel lost when it comes to choosing projects that have value or haven't already been done. How should I approach this?

It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed! Self-study can be tough; many of us learn better through structured education. You're likely in the same boat as others who feel like they only know how to follow instructions without truly understanding the concepts. Just know that you’re not alone in this!

Welcome to the coding grind! Honestly, the best way to learn is to just dive in. Start coding random projects and don't stress about getting everything right on the first try. The more you code, the more you'll start to grasp the language and logic behind it. It's all about trial and error—your skills will definitely improve as you keep at it!

Exactly! I think of coding like learning an instrument. You’ll hit some wrong notes, but eventually, it starts to sound good. Just keep practicing!

I totally relate, and you're definitely not alone! Just start creating something—anything—based on your interests. If you're leaning toward backend programming, consider trying out ideas like developing a console emulator or a mini operating system. You don’t need to be an expert; just experiment and see what sticks. Getting hands-on experience with projects speaks volumes to potential employers, even if it feels daunting!

Don't rush the process! The more you code, the more it will start to make sense. Set small goals and celebrate your wins, no matter how small they seem. Persistence is key!
