What should I do if I think my PC’s been hacked?

I recently had a serious issue where someone used my account to buy a €20 game key through PayPal, which I discovered on the 12th. I acted quickly, changing my passwords on PayPal and the website and contacted support for a refund. I thought that was the end of it until the night of the 15th when someone attempted to purchase a €60 gift card on my Amazon account, which thankfully was blocked. I panicked and changed all my passwords, disconnected devices linked to my accounts, and ran security scans with Adlice Protect and Malwarebytes. I'm really worried about my security and don't want to format my PC since it has everything I need. What steps can I take for better security and peace of mind?

It sounds like you might not be thinking your PC was hacked, but there have been a lot of data leaks lately that could be impacting your accounts. Are you using unique passwords for every site? That’s really important! If not, try to implement two-factor authentication wherever possible for additional security.

I totally understand the hesitation to format your PC, but if it seems that serious, it might be a necessary step. Do you have access to an old SSD? Install Linux Mint on it, and use that for your online transactions. Stick to using your old Windows installation for everything else. It’s safer this way!

Windows 10 isn’t getting security updates for many users anymore. If you can, consider upgrading to Windows 11 or switching to Linux for better security. If that’s not possible, change all your passwords and seriously consider formatting your PC. I know it’s tough, but you need to take those steps to protect yourself.
