What is a fair hourly rate for IT Ops work?

I'm curious about the pay scale in IT Operations—not just support roles, but broader IT tasks as well. For instance, if I'm quoted $18 per hour for a comprehensive Active Directory (AD) migration over a 9-12 month contract that includes everything from discovery to full deployment for a company with 3,000-3,500 employees, does that sound reasonable? What do others charge for similar work?

For that sort of contract work, around $300-$450 per hour is more realistic, depending on the client and project length. Remember, if you're going solo, factor in self-funding needs like health insurance and retirement.

I wouldn't even get out of bed for less than $75. In fact, I just helped with a similar job, and my rate was around $225 an hour minimum! Setting up AD correctly takes experience, and it's a big responsibility.

$18 an hour? That's more of a student wage or maybe for entry-level help desk work! If you're doing a full AD migration, you're looking at a much higher rate—like $100 an hour at minimum.

Honestly, $18 is laughable. You should be aiming for at least $100, if not more. For serious IT work like that, especially in a big company, anything less than $40 is just not worth it.
