I'm reviving my first PC build from 2012, and I still have all the original parts. Here's what I've got:
- Intel i7 3770k (overclocked to 4.4GHz)
- Asus Sabertooth Z77 motherboard
- 16GB G.Skill 2133MHz RAM
- WD Raptor 1TB hard drive (still works great)
- Bitfenix Colossus case
- GTX 980 Ti (originally had a GTX 670)
I'm on the hunt for a budget-friendly CPU cooler to keep my overclocked 3770k cool. I used an AIO before, but I don't want to risk it again. Would the Thermalright Assassin X 120R be enough, or should I spend a bit more on the Peerless Assassin 120?
Additionally, is it worth it to attempt overclocking the RAM or should I just upgrade to a 2400MHz kit? Or maybe just leave everything at stock?
Lastly, can I run Windows 11 on this setup, or should I stick with Windows 10? And what about Linux gaming support for such an older system? I'd love to hear your recommendations!

What kind of performance are you hoping to get from this upgrade? Keep in mind, this is a really old setup. Tweaking things like RAM or CPU speed isn't going to make a massive difference given the age of the components.
Most modern coolers should do the trick for you, but just a heads up: a single tower cooler might struggle with your overclocked 3770k. Consider getting a dual tower cooler instead, or simply remove the overclock if you're looking for a more stable setup. As for the RAM, I’d stick with what you have; it might not be worth it to spend money on a slight performance increase. You should be able to run Windows 11, but you’ll need to look up some workarounds for the older CPU. And older or lighter games should run fine on your system.
For that cooler, I think the Peerless Assassin 120 would be a better choice over the Thermalright, especially for overclocking. Regarding the RAM, overclocking it isn't really worth the trouble on such an old system, just leave it stock. And go for Windows 11 if you follow a tutorial for the CPU restrictions—there aren't huge issues with Linux gaming on older setups, but you may run into some compatibility hiccups.
