Is My 450W PSU Enough for My New CPU and Motherboard Upgrade?

I'm in the process of upgrading my old PC, swapping out my Intel i5-8400 and Gigabyte motherboard for a new Ryzen 5800X. I plan to keep my Nvidia 3060. My power supply is a Seasonic Focus 450 Gold, and while my new GPU and motherboard have just arrived, I'm concerned about whether 450W will be sufficient. Should I go ahead and install the new CPU, or would it be wise to upgrade the PSU as well?

How old is that PSU? Understanding its age can help gauge its capabilities.

I think it’s around 6-7 years old.

It’s probably wise to upgrade the PSU too. That 450W doesn’t give you much headroom.

Honestly, your setup with a 3060 and 5800X should be fine on 450W. There might not be a lot of wiggle room, but it should hold up. Just keep in mind that once you decide to upgrade the GPU, you’ll definitely want to get a stronger PSU.

Yeah, I figured the next upgrade will be a costly one since most of my components will need replacing by then. But hopefully, this setup lasts me a while!

For your current setup, that Focus Gold 450W is actually adequate. I have the same PSU, and it handles pretty high loads without issues, way beyond what your PC will need.
