Could My Motherboard Damage My GPU?

Hey everyone, my PC suddenly died overnight and when I took it in for repairs, the technician said both the power supply and the GPU were dead—though the GPU was still powered on, it just wouldn't display anything. I've replaced the power supply, and a new GPU is on its way. In the meantime, I plugged in an old GTX 1060 I had, and it worked for a few hours before the screen went black, even though the GPU fans were still running.

Now I'm wondering, could a faulty motherboard cause damage to the GPU? The 1060 is quite old, so it might have just failed on its own, but I'm worried about putting my new GPU at risk if the motherboard is faulty.

Here are my specs:
Motherboard: GIGABYTE X570 AORUS Elite Wi-Fi
New Power Supply: Thermaltake Toughpower GT 850W

Typically, a motherboard isn't going to outright kill a GPU since it's mainly controlled by the GPU's own BIOS and the power supply. However, if there's an issue with the PCIe slot or power delivery, that could potentially damage a component. Just be cautious!

Yeah, definitely check the PCIe slot. I had a motherboard that melted a GPU into the slot! It was a nightmare.

I’d recommend trying a different slot for the GPU too, just in case.

Did you try testing the 1060 in another system? It could help confirm if it still works or if it's truly fried.

They did test my old GPU in another system and it was completely dead, but I’ve got no other system to try the 1060 myself.

That makes sense. It’s tough when you can't check it elsewhere.
