Best Remote KVM Options for a Home Setup

I'm looking to upgrade my remote KVM setup and I've heard that purchasing old enterprise gear might be better than buying new consumer options. I've got a Compaq 72u running multiple media and smart home systems, and I'm planning to host some business applications at home with Proxmox. Right now, I have a small Dell monitor and keyboard in my rack, but it's pretty outdated. I'd prefer to switch to a remote KVM that I can access over VPN. What older KVM systems do you recommend I look for on eBay that provide good value?

Take a look at JetKVM or some GL.iNet products. They’re user-friendly and affordable. Since you only need to manage a few systems like OpnSense and Headscale, these options should work perfectly without straining your budget.

Yeah, I'm leaning toward the GL.iNet. It's just for my firewall; I can access everything else via RDP or SSH. Plus, I have smart plugs set up to manage power, so it should be efficient for starting up my new business!

If you're already using a local KVM that can switch inputs with keyboard shortcuts, consider the smaller IP-KVMs like Nano KVM or the JetKVM. They provide a more modern interface and with the right adapter, you can use a VGA output as well.

You might want to check out the Raritan KX2 model. It offers both KVM and serial port access, which is super handy. A good serial interface can be a lifesaver if you accidentally lock yourself out. It's a solid option for home use without breaking the bank!

Do these models still require Java plugins? I remember that being an issue before.
