How to Securely Access Old Hard Drives Without Infecting a New Laptop?

I'm running a business and I've noticed that my customer and business data may be leaking in some way. I have about 7-8 hard drives, and it's tough for me to figure out which one might be infected. I'm planning to buy a new laptop, and I need everything on it to be secure from any potential issues on my existing hard drives. Is there a way to access the data on my old drives without exposing my new laptop to any malicious software? Would a dual boot system help, or is there a better solution? I'd appreciate any advice you can offer!

It sounds like your virus is probably on the operating system drive, not the external ones. Before doing anything, ensure that your infected system is completely offline. If you've confirmed there's a leak, notifying your customers is crucial. Dual boot won't protect you from issues on your external drives. If you suspect the infection might have spread, make sure to wipe those drives before connecting them to the new laptop.

I would recommend using a virtual machine to scan the old drives for viruses. If you have another PC around, that could work too—scan the drives with it or set up a virtual machine there. Just be sure to wipe your old laptop first in case it's infected as well.

Actually, if your old system is infected, the virus could potentially affect the external drives through the host machine even with a VM. Before introducing any external drives to your new laptop, ensure auto-run is disabled for USBs, then run multiple scans on them to confirm they’re clean. But your main concern might actually be the primary system, not the externals.
