How to Better Communicate Complex Tech Topics to Deaf Students in Workshops?

Hey everyone! I'm a university student who runs workshops in our local Google Developer Group Chapter. Our university has a significant deaf and hard of hearing community, and I've had some deaf students attend my talks on topics like Kubernetes, Containers, and Linux. We've been able to get interpreting services when needed, which has been super helpful, but I've recently felt there might still be a communication gap. Even though my presentations are in English, I wonder if the technical concepts are being communicated effectively in ASL. Has anyone faced a similar issue? I would love some tips on improving my communication skills to make all attendees feel included!

Interpreters usually do their best, but they might not always get the technical jargon right. I once had a deaf student in my class, and I noticed some errors in interpretation—like the interpreter signing 'Indian' instead of spelling it out. I ended up helping out by signing explanations during class! It might help to check in with a few of your students; they'll likely feel that deer-in-the-headlights moment when complex terms come up, especially with fast-paced lectures.

Totally get that! I plan on reaching out to some professors to discuss making sure interpreters are familiar with technical terms. We have a large hard of hearing population here, so I think we can find the right resources!
