Is Upgrading from an i7 12700K to a 9950X3D Worth It?

I'm currently running an i7 12700K with 64GB DDR5 RAM at 6000MHz, paired with an RTX 4070TI Super. I'm considering upgrading to a 9950X3D, which will cost me around €900-1000 for just the CPU and motherboard. While my i7 still performs well since I got it in 2022, I've heard that the AMD might deliver a significant boost in performance. I mainly game at 1440p and use DLSS in some titles. Is this upgrade worth it, or should I hold off?

You mostly game, right? The 9800X3D is a better option in terms of performance per euro. You’ll get great gaming performance without spending too much more money.

Yes, mainly gaming, but I also use VMs a lot. More cores would help with that.

I went from a 14700K to a 9800X3D and I don't regret it at all. The boost was definitely worth it for my gaming experience.

Could you share your other specs? Like your GPU and RAM? Also, do you play at 1440p? How much did you notice the jump in games?

I would say no to the 9950X3D. I recently upgraded to the 9800X3D for sim racing in VR, and it made a nice difference for me.

If gaming is your main focus, going from the i7 to the 9950X3D might not be worth it. Stick with the 9800X3D if you want a solid upgrade. You might want to check your GPU usage in your favorite games, as that could inform your decision.

Honestly, I'd recommend waiting for the next generation of AMD CPUs. If you're seeking a performance boost, consider upgrading your graphics card instead; you'll see a more noticeable difference in gaming performance.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat with the GPU prices. I'm holding off until they drop a bit.
