How can I troubleshoot a laptop that won’t boot and keeps blue screening?

I'm trying to help my dad with his laptop, which seems to be in really bad shape. He got it back in 2019, and it's running on an AMD FX-8800P, which I think is just a cheap repurposing of an old laptop chip. Now in 2026, it's not booting at all. When I start it up, I get a blue screen with the error 'UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME', and it tries to repair the volume but fails. I even used a Hiren's Boot CD to clone the hard drive to an SSD, but even that crashed with a blue screen before I could do anything, showing 'SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED' with a failure on Ntfs.sys. I tried making a new Hiren's Boot drive, but that didn't help either. I'm leaning towards just getting a refurbished Dell OptiPlex with an i3-8100 and 8GB of RAM instead. Has anyone encountered blue screens with Hiren's? Could this indicate a motherboard or CPU issue?

Honestly, for a laptop that old, it might be wise just to invest in a new one. You can find great deals on open box models or refurbished systems that are significantly more powerful than what your dad currently has. It might save you a lot of headaches in the long run!

That's my plan! Just hoping to salvage some data if I can.

It seems like your drive could be dead. If you put in a new drive and install Windows fresh, that might solve your blue screen issues. But if you're still getting errors with the drive unplugged, that points to a deeper hardware failure.

That's the thing—I bluescreened off the Hiren's Boot with the drive unplugged, so I think it's time to consider replacing the whole laptop.

Have you checked the BIOS settings? Make sure the CD drive is set as the primary boot device. If it's not working, maybe try booting from a USB stick instead, if you have one around. But from what you've described, it sounds like there's a severe hardware failure likely at play here.

I was booting from a USB SSD, but I'll check the BIOS just to be safe.

Make sure you're actually booting from the CD properly. The errors you're having could indicate issues with your memory. Try running Memtest86 or something similar to test the RAM; that could help identify any faults there. Just keep in mind that these blue screens from a CD image are usually due to hardware issues.

I'll definitely run Memtest—thanks for the suggestion!

It definitely sounds like you might have a hardware issue there. That CPU is pretty outdated and not great overall. I suggest you try using Clonezilla next time if you're looking to clone drives, but that could be tricky if the laptop can't even stay on long enough. If you can, test the RAM health, as that can lead to all sorts of weird problems as well.

Yeah, that CPU really is a dud. I'm planning to replace it for sure.
