Can I Jump Straight to Senior DevOps Positions?

Hey DevOps community! I've been working in system support for the last four years, mainly dealing with Linux, Ansible, and web services like Nginx and MySQL. Recently, I've been diving deep into Docker, Kubernetes, and Azure, plus I've earned some certifications. However, I'm only getting responses for junior DevOps roles that require one year of experience, which don't pay well. Is it a must for me to go through the junior to senior path, or can I land a mid-level or senior role directly? What steps should I take? Should I focus on more projects, or is there a different way to gain the right experience? I appreciate any guidance! Thanks!

If you're questioning your fit for a senior role, it's likely you're not quite there yet. Consider strengthening your resume by focusing on skills like CI/CD, Kubernetes, and more project experience. You might not want to stay in a junior role too long, but gaining the right experience will be key.

With just one year of Docker and your current skills, you might fit into a junior role, but you’ll find it challenging to qualify for senior positions. Many companies prefer applicants with years of direct experience. If you're really committed to this career path, taking on one of those junior roles could be essential for your growth.

As someone who's been in the field for a while, I can say that a year of experience generally only positions you for internships or junior roles. Senior roles require not just knowledge but also the ability to architect and troubleshoot complex systems, which comes with time and hands-on practice.

That's really interesting, thanks for sharing!

Based on what you've shared, it seems like you're currently at a junior level in DevOps. Even if you spruce up your resume, it might not help during interviews if you lack extended hands-on experience. Companies typically look for more extensive CI/CD experience for senior roles, so it might be wise to consider junior positions for now.
