Hey everyone! I'm reaching out for some advice as I'm feeling a bit lost in my job search. I've been unemployed since June and have used this time to enhance my skills and look for new opportunities. I've worked in IT for 8 years, starting in help desk before moving up to IT Specialist roles.
After a total of 6 years in IT Specialist positions, I left my last job feeling burnt out to focus on my mental health. During this time, I earned my Security+ certification and aimed to land a role as a SOC Analyst, but after one failed interview, I'm feeling stuck.
I also have some experience with server management and basic networking, and I'm currently studying for the AZ-104 certification. I'm wondering if I'm spreading myself too thin by trying to tackle too many areas at once. With my certification, I'm considering applying for remote Sys Admin jobs but am also unsure if that's evolving into Cloud Engineer positions.
Lastly, is it wise to broaden my search even in what seems to be a tough job market?

Honestly, if you've been out since June, I would recommend just getting back into any IT job you can find. It sounds like you have good experience, but breaking into cybersecurity can be tricky. What happened in your interview? As for shifting to cloud roles, that's definitely a solid next step, but typically you'd want some relevant on-the-job experience to go with that AZ-104 cert.
I hear you on the frustration of job searching. The banking job you applied for sounds like a long process; that's not uncommon in that industry. If your last interview was filled with cybersecurity questions and you weren't prepared, that's definitely tough. If you’re considering other IT Specialist roles again, it might be a good idea to brush up on your Security+ study materials just in case. It’s hard to believe your experience hasn’t created a clearer path, but it seems like you’re starting to realize what you want, which is great.
