Should I Upgrade My Son’s Gaming PC or Buy a New One?

My son is facing some performance issues like lag and lower graphics settings while gaming, especially when he has several tabs open. He's been using this PC for his gaming needs, and now that he's about to leave for college, I'm considering whether it's more cost-effective to upgrade specific components like the CPU, GPU, or RAM, or if I should save up to buy a new one in a year. Currently, his rig includes a CyberPowerPC Gamer Supreme with an Intel Core i7-13700KF, 16GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti with 8GB of VRAM, and a 2TB SSD. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Definitely consider upgrading the GPU to one in the 70 tier range like a 4070 Super or 5070. The limited 8GB of VRAM is likely the main issue with lagging and lower quality visuals. The CPU is great. If budget allows, adding another 16GB RAM would be beneficial too, especially if it's DDR4, which should be easier to find.

What games is your son having issues with? Check the settings and resolution he's playing at, like 1080p or 1440p. Personally, I have older hardware than what you listed and still run my games fine. It might be worth running some stress tests to see if the system is functioning properly.

To tackle lag issues, I'd recommend going for 32GB of RAM and ensuring that the SSD isn't more than 80% full. For graphics, consider what resolution the games are being played at. The 4060 Ti should handle 1080p well, but if he's on 1440p, a better GPU might be necessary. What's your budget looking like?

Thanks for the tips! The budget is flexible; if I were buying new for him, I’d consider something up to $3,000. For upgrades, I'd prefer it to be cheaper than buying a new system and still long-lasting. I want a good foundation for him, so if upgrading makes sense long-term, I’m onboard!

It sounds like the 16GB of RAM is likely causing the browser lag when multiple tabs are open. The i7-13700KF can support either DDR4 or DDR5 RAM, so check what you currently have and consider getting a 32GB kit. Regarding the graphics, the 8GB VRAM is holding back the visuals. Upgrading to something like an RX 9070 or RTX 5070 could solve these issues. Plus, doing these upgrades yourself isn't that hard, and you can save some money. Don't forget to update the motherboard BIOS if it hasn't been done yet!

So helpful! The RAM and motherboard upgrade should be straightforward for us. About the VRAM upgrade, if we manage to upgrade all three components, will he have a solid system for years to come?
