How can I stop myself from accidentally deleting important folders on Windows?

I've got a folder on my desktop with a lot of important files, and I'm worried about accidentally deleting it. I usually download files and take screenshots that automatically go to the desktop. When I'm done with them, I often use Shift + Delete to remove them permanently, which makes me fear I might select that important folder by mistake and delete it as well. Is there a way to prevent that folder from being deleted accidentally?

Consider changing your download settings, so files go to the Downloads folder instead of your desktop. This way, you separate your clutter from your important files and minimize the risk of accidental deletions.

If those files are really important, consider backing them up regularly. Regular backups can save you from losing data and give you peace of mind.

If you're really paranoid, you could move the folder somewhere less clickable and create a symlink on your desktop. That way, if you delete the symlink, you won't delete the actual folder. This is similar to shortcuts, so you can access your files without risking an accidental delete.

You can set folder permissions to make it harder to delete files. Right-click the folder, go to Properties, then Security. From there, you can adjust your permissions to read-only for your account while keeping full control for backups.

Instead of using Shift + Delete, try just deleting files normally. They’ll go to the Recycle Bin, giving you a chance to restore them if you mess up. That way, you won't have to worry about permanently losing anything.
