I'm considering giving Linux a shot for the first time and have a couple of questions. I've done some research but would specifically like to know about POP! OS. I'll be using my PC mainly for gaming (like Star Citizen, Ready or Not, ATS, BeamNG.drive, and a few others). How friendly is POP! OS when it comes to setting up for gaming? Also, can I save my important files on a separate drive before switching, or will I need to reinstall everything?

Pop! OS can be good, but it’s got some issues with the new desktop they've rolled out. It might not be the most stable experience right now. Definitely check other distributions like Mint or Bazzite—I've heard good things about them!
I’d actually steer clear of POP! OS if you're just starting out. It's not terrible, but their custom desktop environment is still a bit buggy. For gaming, I'd recommend looking into Bazzite or Mint instead. Bazzite is solid because it’s designed to be more stable, and Mint is user-friendly if you prefer a more familiar setup. Plus, Mint offers a few desktop environments, but I'd go with Cinnamon for the best experience. Just a heads up though, Mint might not support the latest hardware right away, so keep that in mind. Overall, I think Bazzite with KDE might be your best bet since it aligns closely with what you'd find on a Steam Deck. As for your files, you'll likely need to reinstall most apps since Linux uses a different file system than Windows. Regular files like music and docs can be transferred easily with a USB drive.
Trying out Linux in a virtual machine first is a great idea! You can see what suits you best without committing. When it comes to gaming, most Linux games may require reinstallation since they use different file formats than Windows. But Steam makes things easier, so maybe check that out! Personally, I've used Fedora and liked it a lot, but I've heard mixed reviews about POP! OS. Just get your hands dirty and experiment; you’ll learn a lot along the way!
If you've got an old PC lying around, why not try Linux on it first? If you enjoy it, you can then switch your main setup. On the game front, POP! is decent but the new COSMIC desktop feels a bit unfinished right now.
