Why Did My Laptop Battery Health Drop to 4% Overnight?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a bind with my laptop. Last night before I slept, my battery was sitting around 70%. But this morning, after just 5 minutes of use, it completely shut down. The power button didn't work, and I wasn't watching the battery indicator closely while it was on.

So I plugged in the charger, and to my surprise, the battery was at 4% but shot up to 100% in about 5 minutes. I unplugged it, and within just 3 minutes it was back to 0%. Checking the battery health, I saw it's now at 4% (1.8 watts). Just last week it was 67% when I checked.

I had installed this battery just 6 months ago, and the shopkeeper assured me it would last 1-2 years. I'm starting to wonder if I was scammed. Is it normal for a battery to fail this fast? Any chance my switch to Arch Linux has anything to do with this? Before the issues, I got about 2.5 hours of battery life when charging to 80-90%. Now it barely lasts five minutes!

I’d recommend contacting the shop where you purchased your battery. Given that it failed so fast, they should provide you with a solution or replacement.

Yeah, that does seem like the way to go. I appreciate the advice!

It sounds like your battery might have developed a physical fault that's making it unable to hold a charge. If this issue popped up just 6 months after installation, it's worth investigating the brand of battery you have. If it was a cheap knockoff, that could be the problem. If it’s a reputable brand, maybe ensure it wasn’t refurbished. You might need to replace it with a new OEM unit this time.

Thanks for the insight! It was supposed to be an original battery, but I guess bad luck happens sometimes. I’ll reach out to the shop and see if they can help.
