Why does my external hard drive cause File Explorer to freeze on my PC?

I need some help figuring this out. Last night, I disconnected my external hard drive from my PC without safely ejecting it. Now, when I try to reconnect it to the same USB port, nothing happens—the usual connection sound doesn't play, and the drive isn't recognized. If I plug it into other USB ports, like the ones on the back of the motherboard, the computer recognizes it, but whenever I try to access it in File Explorer, the system freezes, forcing me to manually disconnect the drive or restart my PC. Interestingly, the hard drive works perfectly fine on my laptop. I've already tried reinstalling the USB drivers for my motherboard but haven't had any luck. I had a similar issue in the past, but for the life of me, I can't remember how I fixed it back then. Any suggestions?

One thing to try is to plug the external drive into another computer, and right-click on the drive to check its properties. Go to the Tools tab and run a check for errors. Sometimes, file system issues can cause strange behavior like this.

Seriously, make sure to back up your drive as soon as you can. It's odd that it works fine on other computers, but the fact that it's freezing your PC means there might be corrupted data or a compatibility issue with your setup.

First, check if your external drive is USB 2.0 or USB 3.0. The connector color helps—white means USB 2.0 and blue means USB 3.0. Before plugging it back into your PC, restart the computer. Then, check Device Manager for any issues. Make sure there are no exclamation points or unknown devices listed. Once it looks good, try reconnecting it, but ensure it goes into the correct USB port according to its type. If it’s still acting up, we might need to look at other issues.
