My New PC Hangs on Boot with USBs Plugged In – Any Ideas?

Hey folks! I built my PC last night and I've been dealing with a strange boot issue ever since. Here are my specs: Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU, Gigabyte B650 UD AX motherboard, Radeon Acer 9070 XT OC GPU, Kingston 256GB M.2 NVMe SSD plus a 1TB HDD, and a 700W Kolink Core 80+ PSU. The problem is that when I try to boot with my keyboard, mouse, or even a USB stick with Windows on it, it hangs on the boot screen for about 5 minutes before going into BIOS.

In the BIOS, no bootable devices are detected. However, my SSD shows up fine, but the HDD doesn't display at all. The only way I can boot normally is when I connect only the HDMI and power cables, with no USB devices attached, and that works in about 10 seconds. I can also hit F12 at just the right moment and select my SSD when it appears, but it's not consistent.

I've tried different USB ports, moved the SSD to different M.2 slots, and even cleared the CMOS twice. I'm exhausted from troubleshooting! I've already ordered a new motherboard and PSU in hopes that'll fix it, but I'd really appreciate any advice or suggestions. It's frustrating to have this issue! Thanks for reading!

I wonder if the USB devices are interfering with the boot process. A lot of systems can hang up if they detect a USB drive but can’t find any bootable media on it. You mentioned that the drives aren't showing up at all in BIOS when USBs are plugged in – that’s pretty weird! Have you tried booting with just the SSD connected, then plugging in the USB devices only after the system is up? It might help to isolate the issue.

Have you double-checked your connections? Make sure all your cables are securely connected, especially to the SSD and motherboard. It's a long shot, but if the motherboard isn't detecting your HDD properly, it might be causing the confusion with the boot sequence. If you ordered a new motherboard already, hopefully, that will sort it out!

It sounds like a boot order issue to me! Make sure to check your BIOS settings the next time you're in there and ensure the SSD with Windows is set as the first boot device. Sometimes, if the system can't find a bootable USB drive, it gets confused and won't recognize your SSD properly. If that doesn't work, it might be worth resetting the BIOS again just in case something is still off.
