Feeling Stuck as a New Grad Software Engineer – Any Advice?

Hey everyone! I graduated a year ago with a degree in Computer Science and even got my Software Engineer badge for taking extra courses, but I'm really feeling stuck right now. I've never built a complex project on my own, just basic stuff like calculators, and I've always relied on others' ideas. I got into Android development during my studies and wanted to pursue that field, but I procrastinated and wasted a lot of time. After graduation, I landed a research position, but again, I didn't make the most of it and didn't progress much. Now, I've been unemployed for two months, and although I've just started taking Android development courses, I'm worried it's too late for me to catch up in this industry.

I've also had friends invite me to work on an application involving LLMs, but I don't even know where to start. I'm looking for any suggestions or advice on how to get back on track and whether it's too late for me to succeed in software engineering. I'm serious about making this my career, but I feel like I've let opportunities slip away. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

There are plenty of people who’ve successfully transitioned into this field later in life, just keep grinding and start building real projects. Even simple ones like a Monty Hall problem can help you practice and get better!

I appreciate that—I'll start small and build my way up! Thanks for the solid advice.

Consider using platforms like Codewars to get started from scratch. It's never too late to pick up programming again, especially if you’re committed to learning.

I’ll check that out while I keep working through my Android classes. Thanks!

Procrastination is your biggest enemy right now. You've had great opportunities, but if you want to make it in programming, you really need to buckle down and focus on building a portfolio. It may feel daunting, but it's definitely not the end of the road. Just remember to tackle that procrastination head-on!

No judgement, but if you're struggling with basic syntax after years of study, it might be time to reassess your commitment. But hey, it's not too late! Just be honest with yourself—put in the real work to build your skills. It's about digging in and getting it done now.

Find something you're genuinely interested in and build a project around that. I did something similar and it really helped me land my first job!
