Help! My Laptop Went Dark After Updating Drivers and Applying Thermal Paste

Hey everyone, I could really use some help with my laptop problem. It's an Asus ROG STRIX G15 Advantage Edition with a Ryzen 9 5900HX processor and a Radeon RX 6800M graphics card. So, here's the backstory: my laptop is about 2.5 years old and was overheating a lot, hitting temperatures over 95°C and shutting down when under heavy load. After updating some drivers and reapplying thermal paste to the CPU and GPU, the overheating issue seems sorted as temperatures are now below 80°C. But here's the kicker: the graphics card is no longer recognized! The laptop is only using the integrated graphics from the CPU now. I checked Device Manager and can't find it anywhere, not even with hidden devices enabled. Despite several attempts to uninstall and reinstall drivers, nothing's changed. The thermal paste application went well, and the CPU cooling has improved, which makes me think this could be related to software. Has anyone encountered this issue or have any suggestions? I'm a bit desperate! Thanks in advance!

I hate to say it, but it's possible something might have gotten damaged on the motherboard during the thermal paste application. If you do a BIOS reset and your GPU still isn't showing up, it could be a hardware issue. Just make sure you were careful during the repasting process, as even a small mistake can lead to serious problems.

If you're not seeing the GPU in the BIOS, the situation isn't looking great. It might not just be a driver issue. Sometimes, damage can happen and your GPU might be dead if the board got compromised. Just make sure to double-check everything thoroughly before deciding to replace or repair your laptop.

Thanks for the heads up! I'm still hoping it’s just a software issue, but I guess I’ll have to look into getting it checked out if I can't figure it out soon.

Sounds like you might be dealing with a tricky issue. I found a thread on Reddit that describes a similar problem with the GPU not appearing in BIOS or Device Manager. It may be a software glitch, but if the GPU isn't showing in the BIOS at all, then you might need to consider some hardware troubleshooting or professional help. Keep us updated on what you find!

Oh man, that's a tough situation. You might want to check your BIOS settings first. Sometimes, there's an option to enable or disable the dedicated GPU there. Also, consider resetting the BIOS to see if that helps bring your GPU back to life. If you're feeling brave, you could open up the laptop again to make sure everything is connected properly and nothing's out of place. If none of those work, it might be time to consult a repair shop.
