What to do when an external hard drive shows corruption?

Today, I tried to access my external hard drive but was greeted with an error message saying it's not accessible and that the volume doesn't have a recognized file system. I attempted to run a check using the command prompt (chkdsk), but it hung and displayed an unspecified error (766f6c756d652e63 470). I'm at a loss about what to do next.

If the drive is really in bad shape, cloning it might be your best bet. Try to pull off any files you can to a good drive. If cloning fails due to the damage, plugging it into a working PC could help you recover files manually. But if it's crucial data, a professional recovery service might be necessary, although they can be quite pricey. Just a heads up, if you hear weird noises from the drive, that's usually not a good sign.

You should definitely try downloading CrystalDiskInfo; it can run a SMART test to check the health of your drive. Also, consider DiskGenius—it’s helpful for checking each sector and finding any bad ones. Good luck!

That sounds pretty serious! If the error message is showing up, it's indicating that the drive has hit a wall, and Windows isn't able to process it. First, check if you can hear any unusual sounds like beeping or clicking from the drive. Also, when you look at it in the system column, does it say RAW? That might give you more clues.
