Is a Part-Time DevOps Apprenticeship Worth It for a Network Design Analyst?

I'm currently six months into my graduate role as a Network Design Analyst after completing three years at university. My job mainly involves working on Fortinet-based networks, supporting commissions and migrations alongside engineers. I'm about to take my CCNA, and I plan to pursue Fortinet certifications after that to enhance my networking skills. Recently, my company offered me a fully funded part-time DevOps apprenticeship through Multiverse. I'm curious about the pros and cons of taking this apprenticeship in relation to my current career path. Would this opportunity enhance my networking career by expanding my knowledge in automation, infrastructure, and cloud technologies, or should I focus solely on networking certifications and experience? I would love to hear from anyone who has taken a similar route or works in networking or DevOps.

Hands-on experience is always better than just studying from books! Doing this apprenticeship will help solidify what you learn and let you uncover unexpected insights about real operational environments. The workplace situations you'll encounter often differ from what you learn in class, as companies sometimes make questionable decisions, but you'll learn from those situations too!

If the apprenticeship is short-term, I'd say go for it! It will enhance your cloud and automation knowledge, and since the company is covering the costs, it seems like a no-brainer. Don't overthink it—take advantage of this opportunity!

It's great that your employer is supporting your learning, but do review your contract carefully. Many programs have clauses about paying back course fees if you leave the company within a certain time after you finish the course. Regardless, whether you stay with your current employer or move on in the future, the skills you'll gain will still be valuable. Continuous learning is essential in this field, so don't miss out on the opportunity!

I believe it would broaden your career opportunities beyond just networking. DevOps is more of a mindset than a strict job title. Having a solid grasp of networking is beneficial in DevOps roles, especially for those working with infrastructure. Given that much of the work today involves coding, being able to automate processes and tasks could be a huge asset, even if you join a less automated company.

Make sure the apprenticeship offers real hands-on experience, particularly with tools like CI/CD, IaC, and containers. Also, clarify whether your employer provides study time and check if there's any pay reduction. It's crucial to know if the syllabus aligns with your career goals, so look into that before making a decision.
