Help! My Lenovo Laptop Won’t Start Properly

Hey everyone! I've been trying to get my old Lenovo Z51 laptop running again, but I'm hitting a wall. I keep getting a message that says, "Default boot device missing or boot failed. Insert recovery media and hit any key. Then select 'boot manager' to choose a new boot device or to boot recovery media." When I click okay, it only shows the option for "EFI PXE Network," which isn't working either. Sometimes, after trying to restart, I can get to the login screen, but it freezes up and then I see a blue screen that tells me my computer encountered a problem and needs to restart. It's a frustrating cycle! Is there any chance I can get it back up and running? I really appreciate any help! 😢

If you can get into Windows or Safe Mode, check your C:WindowsMinidump for crash logs. Those dump files can help you diagnose the BSOD issues. If you find any, you can zip them up and upload them to a file sharing site. Getting those logs can really help track down what’s going wrong!

Sounds like either the operating system has become corrupted or your hard drive might be failing. I'd recommend checking the BIOS to see if it recognizes the hard drive. If it does show up, that’s good, but if it doesn't, it’s likely toast. You might need to replace it. Good luck!

It's definitely frustrating! If your laptop allows you to log in even for a moment, try to make sure everything is backed up. If the hard drive is failing, you may want to replace it or get a solid-state drive (SSD) for better performance. Also, sometimes just reinstalling the OS can fix some corrupt system files.
