Upgrading from a 6700 to a 3080 Ti: Why Aren’t My Games Performing Well?

Hey everyone! I've just made a pretty significant upgrade from an RX 6700 (non-XT) to an RTX 3080 Ti, but I'm not getting the performance improvement I expected. I've been trying out several games, including Cyberpunk (without ray tracing), Sifu, Sparking Zero, and Elden Ring, at 1440p with max settings. While I can sometimes hit the 60 FPS mark, it feels throttled and inconsistent. I want to be able to play most AAA titles smoothly at 60 FPS at least until 2024. I'm thinking about possibly upgrading my other components, considering my current specs: an Intel i5 12400F, a single stick of 16GB RAM at 2666MHz, and an Asrock H610M motherboard that limits CPU power to 65W. Should I first upgrade to dual channel RAM at 3200MHz? Or should I consider a CPU and motherboard upgrade? I've struggled with finding a good deal on AM4 CPUs, and AM5 seems too pricey, so I'm looking at options like the Ryzen 7 5800X. Do you think I should start with the RAM upgrade first and see if that helps?

You're definitely feeling the effects of having a single stick of low-speed RAM. Try to get another stick to run in dual-channel, and you'll see a difference. For the CPU, considering what you have, a 14600K could be a decent upgrade down the road, but prioritize that RAM first.

Honestly, your RAM's speed and configuration are the biggest factors here. Upgrading to a second 16GB stick of 3200MHz CL16 will help a lot. Your CPU is alright for now, but if you can, consider moving to a better motherboard and CPU setup later on.

Yeah, that 2666MHz single stick is really dragging your performance down. Dual-channel RAM can make a big difference, especially in gaming. I'd suggest getting a matching stick of RAM to start with, then see how your performance improves before deciding on a CPU upgrade.

In my experience, your RAM is the main culprit here for performance issues. I'd recommend picking up another identical 16GB stick at 2666MHz for now. If you find that you're still underwhelmed after that, only then consider investing in a better motherboard and CPU.

Your main bottleneck is definitely that single stick of slow RAM. Upgrading to a dual-channel setup with 3200MHz memory will likely give you a noticeable boost in performance. After that, if you're still not satisfied, you can look into a CPU and motherboard upgrade, but make the RAM your first priority.
