How Do I Install My SSD in the M.2 Slot Without The Right Screw?

Hey everyone! I'm building my first PC, and I'm struggling a bit with installing my Samsung V-NAND 990 Pro SSD into the M.2 Slot on my ASUS A620-Plus Wi-fi motherboard. The standoff and screw that came with the motherboard kit don't fit into the 2280 screw hole. I thought it might be due to a nut that was already there, so I removed it, but now there are no threads to attach the standoff to the board. I'm worried I might have used the wrong screw/standoff and compromised the motherboard somehow. Should I take the motherboard out and look for something to attach from underneath? I've posted some images to illustrate the issue, but I'm hoping for some guidance on what to do here.

I get it, building a PC for the first time can be super confusing! But don't stress too much about a missing nut. If the hole isn't stripped, refitting the mounting nut back without threads is usually fine. If it's not secure, check if the manual suggests any alternative for the mounting or reach out for support from the motherboard manufacturer. You're definitely not alone on this—lots of us have been there!

Totally! Manuals can be lacking sometimes, and not every installation scenario is covered, especially for first-timers. Just take it slow and ask questions when you're unsure. You've got this!

It sounds like you might have just pressed the mounting nut out, which can happen. If you didn't force it and it came out smoothly, it might just be a press-fit. Try putting it back in gently and see if you can secure the standoff and screw with the SSD. It may be okay if it feels firm when you press it back. If it pops out again, don’t worry about gluing it; that could create a mess. Just make sure it’s seated well before you install the SSD. Take your time, and good luck!

Yeah, definitely don't glue it. If it's not staying put, it might actually need to be soldered back if it was originally soldered. If you've got to take the board out, a local repair shop could help if you're not comfortable soldering. Just make sure everything is unplugged and you're safe!
