Is Upgrading to a 5800X Worth It for Gaming in 2026?

I'm currently running a Ryzen 5600 with a 6900XT at 1440p, but I've noticed that in demanding games like Cyberpunk, AC Valhalla, and GTA Online, my CPU tends to bottleneck the GPU. Specifically, my 1% lows drop significantly. I'm considering upgrading to a 5800X since it's relatively cheap right now. Do you think the extra two cores would make a difference? Options like the 5700X3D and 5800X3D are priced similarly to the 7800X3D in the used market, making them unappealing. Also, I'm not looking to switch to AM5 due to the high RAM costs—over €600 isn't reasonable for me. I want to future-proof my setup a bit longer, ensuring smooth performance rather than chasing high FPS, and hope to see a drop in RAM prices in a year or two. What are your thoughts?

If you're looking strictly at gaming, a 5500X3D can match or even outperform a 5800X. But keep in mind, for productivity tasks, the 5800X will likely have the edge. It's crucial to consider what you're actually prioritizing with this upgrade.

So if I want gaming performance, I should lean towards the 5500X3D?

Upgrading to a 5800X can help a bit, but the performance increase may not be as significant as you expect. Many suggest opting for the 5500X3D since you might find it cheaper on platforms like AliExpress. Additionally, switching to Intel could give you more options with your DDR4 RAM and broader CPU support, which might be worth considering.

That's interesting! But will the 5800X at least reduce those performance dips?

Honestly, the bulk of gaming usually runs on only 1-2 cores, so with just a slight performance boost expected—maybe around 10%—it might not be worth the upgrade. I’ve found that most titles only need a couple of cores to function well, so higher core counts won’t always equate to better gaming performance.

That makes sense! I barely see my games utilizing more than a couple of cores either.
