I just got myself a 1440p monitor, and I'm using an RTX 5070 paired with a Ryzen 5 7600x. I'm trying to understand why the RTX 5070 is considered a 1440p GPU when I'm only seeing around 85 FPS in my games. Am I missing something, or is my understanding of what a 1440p GPU can do flawed?

Using DLSS can help boost your FPS significantly, so it's worth exploring that option! It allows for decent performance at 1440p with some scaling benefits.
You can definitely get higher than 85 FPS in many games unless you’re dealing with an unoptimized title. For reference, my older 3070 Ti can hit 144 FPS at medium settings in 1440p games.
I ran a 3070 Ti at 1440p and hit my 144 Hz monitor on some games. These days it's more about ray tracing sucking up performance. Do you use DLSS?
85 FPS isn't a bad frame rate at all! Not every card needs to push triple-digit FPS to handle a resolution. What games are you playing, and what settings are you using?
If all your games are capped at 85 FPS exactly, something might be capping your frame rate. You didn’t mention the games or settings, but using high-quality ray tracing will drop your FPS significantly. Even on Linux, I get above 85 FPS with a 3070 at 1440p max settings.
Considering the 9070 is available at a similar price, it's worth a look if you're thinking of an upgrade. But hey, you already have the 5070, so enjoy the new monitor!

I was testing Arc Raiders at the epic preset without ray tracing and managed 85 FPS. I know that's good, but I was expecting better since I got 130+ FPS at 1080p.
