Is It Worth Choosing DDR5 Over DDR4 for My First PC Build?

I'm planning to build my first PC soon, probably before August, as I currently just play on my PS5. I've been hearing a lot about DDR5 RAM and I'm curious: is the difference between DDR4 and DDR5 significant enough to justify the higher cost? Initially, I thought I could save up for DDR5, but as I put together my budget, it seems like sticking with DDR4 might be smarter, especially since I mainly want to play casual games like Grand Theft Auto. Also, I'm wondering if DDR4 will remain viable for gaming even after 2026?

Choosing between DDR4 and DDR5 really boils down to your budget and what you need for your build. Both types are good, but it's wise to pick components based on what you can afford, not just the latest tech. I'd recommend consulting with someone who has experience to help you put together a solid parts list. Good luck!

Thanks for the helpful tip! I'm watching a lot of build videos for inspiration and I’ll definitely reach out to someone experienced for advice.

Honestly, now isn't the best time to buy a PC. Prices are pretty high right now and they might not improve anytime soon. If you can wait, July might have better pricing on DDR5. In the meantime, focus on what games you want to play and how you want your settings; that will help you a lot when you're closer to buying.

If you're thinking long-term, go for DDR5 if your budget allows. The current RAM shortage is driving prices up, but once it settles, older AM4 builds might lose value. Consider investing in hardware that will be easier to sell or upgrade in the future.

Yeah, if you wait until the shortages end... maybe in 2034 or so! But really, it’s good advice. Think ahead!

I've got a PC that's around six years old and has 64GB of DDR4. From what I've read, I wouldn't notice much difference between that and DDR5, especially since I mainly browse the web. If your gaming is not heavy on graphics, DDR4 will work well.

The platform you choose will determine which RAM type you can use. If you're going for AMD's latest AM5 or Intel's LGA1700, you'll need DDR5. But for older platforms like AM4, DDR4 is your option. Just remember that in many cases, the performance difference isn't massive unless you're doing specific tasks. For casual gaming, DDR4 should be just fine.
