Am I an Authentic Programmer If I Use AI for Help?

I've been programming since 2023, focusing on Roblox Studio, and I've made significant progress. Right now, I'm developing a first-person shooter game with features like a dedicated data saving system, a loadout system, in-game currency, and purchasable weapons and perks. It's exciting! I'm also learning C# for Unity; I just started yesterday and it's a bit challenging, but I'm determined to push through. My question revolves around my learning process. While working on Roblox, I primarily relied on documentation, video tutorials, and AI to help me out, especially when I got stuck. I only turn to AI if I can't debug something myself. Does that make me less of a real programmer? I feel like back in the day, programmers had to rely entirely on their knowledge or help from others. I also wonder about AI being a passing trend; if it is, will it eventually affect how we view human programmers?

Even seasoned developers now integrate AI into their workflows. It's part of modern tools and doesn’t make you any less of a programmer. What truly matters is how you utilize it. From what you’ve described, you're building your skills effectively by creating projects and debugging. So yes, you’re an authentic programmer!

Using AI to help understand something you're stuck on is just like looking it up online or asking a more experienced developer. Your approach shows you’re learning well, especially since you can critique the AI's suggestions and use them for debugging. That’s how growth happens; keep at it!

Relying on AI doesn’t detract from your authenticity as a programmer—it's just another resource like any documentation or forums. Spotting incorrect AI suggestions and using them to refine your understanding actually highlights your capability. The systems you’re building in your game are impressive and speak to your foundation!

If you think an AI model is wrong, don't hesitate to report the issue. Every bit of feedback helps improve these models. As you gain more experience, you might even build a following by sharing your discoveries and insights through videos or posts. Keep pushing forward!
