I built my PC back in 2019 and have gradually added parts over time, but I'm starting to have trouble running games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 and Crimson Desert. I don't need to run everything at Ultra settings, but I want a smoother experience.
Here are my current specs:
- **CPU:** AMD Ryzen 5 2600X (with stock cooler)
- **GPU:** Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3060 12GB OC GDDR6
- **RAM:** 32GB DDR4 3000Hz (4x8GB)
- **Storage:** Samsung 990 EVO 2 TB M.2 NVME SSD
- **Motherboard:** Gigabyte B450M DS3H Micro ATX AM4
- **Power Supply:** Corsair CX650M 650W Semi-Modular
- **Case:** Thermaltake Versa H18 MicroATX
- **Fans:** 3 Corsair LL120 + 1 Thermaltake stock fan
- **Monitors:** Gigabyte G27QC A 1440p 165Hz, Gigabyte G27Q 1440p 144Hz
I'm thinking of upgrading the CPU, likely to the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, which is around $200 and won't require a motherboard change. I'm also considering the Gigabyte WINDFORCE OC GeForce RTX 5070 for about $650, but I'm conflicted as I only got my 3060 last year. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You might want to consider grabbing a 5900X if you can find it at a decent price. It's a great value for gaming. Also, after upgrading the CPU, see if you feel the need to boost the GPU later on. It might surprise you how much your overall performance improves with just the CPU upgrade!
I agree, the CPU is the way to go. But also double-check what speed your RAM is actually running at; sometimes there's a little more to gain from tweaking that. You're set with the 32GB, but having it on 2 sticks instead of 4 may help a bit with performance too.
Definitely start with the CPU! It's the biggest bottleneck in your setup right now. Upgrading to the 5800X will really enhance your overall performance. Also, don’t forget to update your BIOS before making any upgrades, or you might run into issues when you swap out CPUs. After that, your GPU is solid for 1080 and 1440p gaming, so you should be good there for the time being.
Also, you might want to consider getting a new cooler if you’re replacing the CPU. The Peerless Assassin PA120 is pretty good and worth checking out.

Your 4x8GB setup is fine for what you're using. Most know that Zen 3 handles 4 sticks well, and you're already running at 3000MHz without issues.
