Which GPU Should I Choose: 3060 12GB or 5050 8GB for My i7-8700?

I'm looking to upgrade my aging PC that currently has a GTX 1060 3GB and an i7-8700. My goal is to keep up with newer games, particularly ARC Raiders, without breaking the bank. I'm hoping to find something used under 250€ and I'm curious about the importance of VRAM. Should I go for the older, slightly weaker 3060 with 12GB of VRAM, or is the 5050 with 8GB the better choice in 2026 despite the VRAM difference? Would love your thoughts!

I'd lean towards the 3060 12GB. It pairs well with the i7-8700 and for titles like ARC Raiders, it should do just fine. Sure, it might lag a bit on heavier AAA games, but with some DLSS adjustments, it can handle them decently. So, I say go for it and enjoy your gaming!

Honestly, since your CPU can only support PCIe 3.0, the 5050's slightly better performance might get limited. The 3060, using 16 lanes of gen4, handles this bandwidth limitation better. I'd say go with the 3060 for a more balanced setup.

The 5050 is generally better in pure performance compared to the 3060. However, if you're playing games that really need around 12GB of VRAM, the 3060 might struggle anyway. Just keep in mind that using the 5050 on a PCIe 3.0 connection will reduce its performance a bit. If you're open to suggestions, the 3060 Ti is often available for a similar price, and it offers better performance than the base version.

While the 3060 12GB might sound like the safer bet for VRAM, it can still struggle on high settings. I'd recommend saving up a little more to get something like the 9060XT - it offers much better performance for your budget.

If you’re really focused on keeping pace with new games, consider saving for a complete system upgrade. Spending on an old card like the 3060 might not be wise in the long run. You’ll likely need a new monitor and Windows 11, so budget around $1400 if you want a good setup.
