I'm currently shutting down my PC properly by using the shutdown option, and I leave it plugged into a surge protector. However, I'm wondering if I should turn off the power supply with its button when I'm going to be away from home for 10 hours or more. Is that really necessary or just overkill?

Honestly, you don't need to turn off the power supply for your PC if you're just shutting it down. It's fine to leave it plugged in when not in use. Some people like to turn everything off to save power, but if your PC is shut down correctly, it won't have any problems.
I agree, a proper shutdown through the menu is good. You don't want to just cut power abruptly unless necessary. If you can, keep it safe and shut it down, but turning off the power supply isn't typically needed unless there's a storm or something unusual happening.

Right! Just remember, if there are storms, it's better to unplug things. Otherwise, just a standard shutdown is enough.
